Saturday, September 10th - Darling St Oval - 1:30pm Kick Off
Northwestern Phoenix vs UTS Gators
This week the Northwestern Phoenix were chomping at the bit to get out and show that they are a new and improved team. They certainly showed it as they beat the UTS Gators for their first win in a year and a half. Stand out stars are RB #96 Jess Davis and WR #27 Vanessa Lu both of whom showed guts and a continued drive to succeed throughout the game. The phoenix new starting QB, all the way up from Canberra, #9 Dani de Groot showed poise and clutch decision making across many plays. DE #94 Pettra "Bam Bam" Zuchelli lived up to her name with several tackles behind the line of scrimmage. #11 Renee "Weapon" Taggart looks to make an impact in her rookie year, playing at three different positions in Saturday's game. Acquired through free agency from the UNSW raiders this year#51 Adela Greenbaum showed she will bring improvement to both the O and D lines including time at C where she protected the QB like a champion.
One key change this year in moving from 7s to 9s was the women now need to kick off and punt with full football rules. The Phoenix kicker #4 Meghan Stokie was very impressive and repeatedly pinned UTS inside of their own half of the field.
The Phoenix team is host to seven rookies this year, four of whom joined just the week before the first game. Keep an eye on this space as the Phoenix look to aim high for the grand finals this year, in hopes of knocking the UNSW Raiders from their perch.
The Phoenix return in week 3 to play at the Newcastle Cobras in Neptune Park. I know I'm stoked!
Final Score: Phoenix 20 - Gators 8
